PHOTO THERAPY FOR HAIR LOSS

shutterstock_119680243Hair loss can have a devastating impact on the physical and emotional lives of both men and women, causing embarrassment, social isolation, depression, and other emotional problems.  In fact, a recent study sponsored by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery determined that 47% of hair loss sufferers would spend their entire life savings to regain their full head of hair, while 30% of hair loss sufferers would forego sex if it meant they could have their hair back.  Luckily, for the 35 million American men and the 21 million American women suffering from androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern baldness) and other forms of hair loss, modern medical technology now offers a variety of hair restoration procedures that are minimally-invasive, cost-effective, comfortable, and safe.

The healing power of light has been known since the early 20th century, and the impact of light wavelengths to facilitate hair growth was discovered by accident in 1967, when a group of scientists studying whether newly-discovered lasers caused cancer inadvertently re-grew the shaved hair on their lab rats.  Since then, numerous studies have shown that the application of low intensity light can stimulate the growth of healthy hair, leading the FDA to approve light therapy as an accepted treatment option for hair loss in 2007.  Harnessing the power of red light, which has the appropriate wavelength to penetrate the scalp to the depth of the hair bulbs, light therapy uses the energy in the light to “jump start” the cells within the hair follicle and stimulate the follicle from dormancy to growth.Contact Us Today!

THE RESTORATIVE POWER OF LIGHT

It seems incredible that something as simple as light, something we take for granted every day, can have such a dramatic impact on a problem as severe as hair loss.  Of course, not all forms of light have the same restorative properties.  In order for light therapy to be effective, the light must be separated into its component wavelengths in order to target the skin to the correct depth.  Most practitioners agree that visible red light with a wavelength of between 600 and 800nm has the right wavelength to penetrate through the skin to reach the hair bulb, located about 6-8mm below the scalp.  Most patients will need exposure to this targeted light wavelength for 15-30 minutes once or twice a week for 6-12 months for maximum benefit.  The process is non-surgical, minimally-invasive, safe, and comfortable, and has been shown to promote enhanced hair growth in the target area.

Surprisingly, scientists are still not entirely sure the mechanism by which light therapy stimulates the hair follicles.  Some researchers believe that the light wavelengths increase blood circulation to the dermal papilla, or the bulb-shaped layer of skin around the follicle, bringing an increase in nutrients to the follicle cells and flushing away waste products that may inhibit proper functioning of the follicle.  Other scientists believe that the low intensity light increases the metabolic activity within the skin cells of the scalp to stimulate the follicles and maximize hair restoration.  Undoubtedly, future research will provide clarification on exactly how the power of light works to restore dormant hair follicles and promote hair regeneration, but in the meantime, patients suffering from the emotional and physical impact of hair loss need not wait!  This is an FDA-approved, proven technology that can safely and comfortably help you regain your full head of hair!
